The Codex Sassoon Bible

Codex Sassoon is a 10th-century Hebrew Bible manuscript that is considered to be one of the most important and valuable manuscripts in the world. 

It is written on parchment and contains all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible. Codex Sassoon is named after its former owner, David Sassoon, a wealthy Jewish businessman and philanthropist.

The codex was written in Tiberias, Israel, in the 10th century. It is written in the Masoretic tradition, which is a system of vocalization and accentuation of the Hebrew Bible that was developed in the 10th century. 

The codex is also notable for its beautiful calligraphy and illuminations.

Codex Sassoon Bible Ownership

The codex was acquired by David Sassoon in the 19th century. It remained in the Sassoon family until 1989, when it was sold to the American Friends of the ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv. 

The Codex Sassoon was sold at auction on May 16, 2023, for $38.1 million. The sale made it the fourth most expensive book and manuscript ever sold. 

The buyer was the American Friends of the ANU Museum of the Jewish People, who purchased it with the aid of a donation from Alfred H. Moses. 

"The Hebrew Bible is the most influential in history and constitutes the bedrock of Western civilization," Mr. Moses said in a statement. The codex is now on display at the museum.
